Baalman Farm & Feedyard is a 6th-generation ag and cattle operation proudly located in Northwestern Kansas, about 10-15 miles north of Interstate 70. We have a large amount of property that's been farmed by our family since the late 1800s. Our acreage is comprised of a wide variety of habitat, from brushy draws and large plots of cropland to rolling grasslands.

Lodging is available as an add-on to your package for $200 per night. We have a house with three bedrooms, with ample room for larger groups if folks are willing to bring cots or sleeping pads.

A Note on our Pheasant Hunting:

Pheasant numbers have been down over recent years with the drought we've been experiencing here in Kansas. That said, we do have birds; however, it's a tough hunt. We cut our wheat, milo, and corn fields into silage for our feedlot, leaving very very short stubble. In the early season in warmer weather, we really have only three viable parcels, about 700 acres that are good for pheasant hunters with smaller numbers (1-6 hunters) in their party and dogs. Well-trained bird dogs ready to put in work are highly recommended. If you don't have dogs, this will be a much more challenging hunt. Large groups have had success in the past hunting our cropland and pivots with blockers as we routinely see birds running the pivot circles and wheel trenches once our fields are harvested.

Dove and pigeon hunters are also invited for a trip out to the farm, especially with the feedlot and livestock tanks around the property. Birds love the area around the feedlot. Quail numbers are moderate; however, they are more spaced out throughout the property. The farm is also a good location for deer hunters looking to hunt Kansas's Unit 1; that said, this is a property that is much more suited for rifle hunters due to how wide open the land is.

Property Visited

Pheasant population looks to be holding strong after chatting with Coby. This property offers good opportunities to work the birds w/ brushy edges adjacent to corn, milo, and wheat stubble for hunters. Bird dogs are a MUST! Doves and pigeons are ridiculously high in numbers. Did not see any deer during my visit, but they are here. The property offers great vantage points for spot and stalk opportunities on both whitetails and muleys. Quail seem to be more scattered.

Didn't get to meet up with Coby. He was probably busy cutting. Nice looking farm and ranch, but farmed to the tilt. No CRP, but some decent draws and pastures. We hunted hard and found very few pheasants, which isn't surprising given the state of pheasant hunting in western Kansas. Also found some others hunting where we had leased. The maps and process through landtrust was fantastic.

LandTrust should walk and hunt all properties before listing them online. Day one hiked 5 miles got two roosters. Day two hiked 10 miles got four roosters. Day three hiked 8 miles got nothing, only jumped two hens. Left two days early. I could shoot my limit in my home state if I walked ten miles per day. The whole point of hunting private is to get your limit in within 4 miles or less. I have two incredible hunting dogs and I am an accomplished upland game hunter. Until the drought is over KS should suspend pheasant and quail hunting. At the very least you should know these facts as you evaluate private land hunting options. If you’re like me you want the chance to harvest your limit everyday after driving 12 hours one way.
