Hutton Niobrara Ranch Wildlife Sanctuary

Nearest Town, Bassett, Nebraska
5,000 acres

The Hutton Niobrara Ranch Wildlife Sanctuary is located along the Niobrara National Scenic River near Bassett, Nebraska. Since 2002, Audubon of Kansas continues Harold and Lucille Hutton's commitment to managing the 5,000-acre ranch while protecting its prairie, woodland, wetland, and aquatic habitat, as well as the wildlife that calls it home.

The ranch is the perfect location for birding, wildlife viewing, and simply enjoying the beauty of the outdoors.

For wildlife viewing, the opportunities are tremendous. The wetland and wet meadow along the Niobrara host elk, mountain lion, bobcat, breeding sandhill cranes, breeding Virginia Rail and Sora, porcupine, and other wildlife. Upland areas are used by Greater Prairie-Chicken and Sharp-tailed Grouse. Riparian streams protect state threatened redbelly dace (small fish). Visitors are asked to enjoy wildlife at a distance to avoid disturbing them.

For nature appreciation, the sunsets over the Niobrara River are gorgeous. All areas are open for hiking, but there are no established trails. Night sky viewing is amazing and the security light at the Hutton House can be turned off to appreciate the dark sky.

Guests are invited to stay in one of our two guesthouses: the Hutton House and Lazy Easy.

The Hutton House was once home to former ranch owners Harold and Lucille Hutton and now features five bedrooms, a large kitchen, three bathrooms, a spacious living/dining area, a fireplace room, an office, front and back porches, along with wireless internet.

The Lazy Easy is our “unplugged” guesthouse without phone or internet access and features four bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen, and a large living and dining room. The facilities have a groovy 1970s feel.

Both properties also have limited cellular service from the major carriers. Viaero does provide service to the area. Additionally, we do our best to keep insects and mice out of the homes, but the age of the houses and the abundant surrounding habitat makes it difficult keeping them out.

Great property for birding, wildlife watching, or just exploring the Niobrara river bottoms. They have plenty of deer on their property as well as a lek to view prairie chickens and their mating rituals.
