Mill Iron Livestock Ranch
Mill Iron Livestock Ranch is located near the Bluebird Trail in Charlie Russell country, and is proudly operated by the 3rd, 4th, and 5th generations of the Holzer family. This picturesque property is also home to one of the oldest cattle brands in Montana!
Mill Iron is a cattle ranch, raising some hay for livestock consumption. Currently, due to drought, cattle numbers are decreased, leaving more area to roam. Deer (usually plentiful, but not likely to satisfy a trophy hunter), some antelope, various game birds, and varmints make the ranch their home.
Some areas of the ranch provide rough terrain for good hiking and great vistas. We’re on the prairie, but 45 minutes will put you in any one of 5 different mountain ranges.
Our ranch features a gravel pile that makes the perfect shooting range up to about 700 yards. Make sure to bring your own targets!
Currently, we do not provide lodging, but campers and tents are welcome. The nice little town of Stanford is 14 miles west of our ranch headquarters, with a motel, 2 bar/restaurants, a deli, a laundromat, and 3 unique gift shops. Lewistown is 42 miles east of our headquarters.
The ranch is 14 miles from Highway 87 and 80 miles from Interstate 15 in Great Falls, providing convenient access for guests driving from near or far.
We do have plans to offer lodging in the near future. Hookups will be available for generators if you want to use your own power.
This family shares a passion to improve soil health, resulting in plant vigor, which improves livestock production and creates an enduring family legacy. We respect the land and expect our guests to do the same while you enjoy our piece of “God’s Country”!

5.0Friendly Folks and Fantastic Big Sky Charlie Russell Country! Super shots of the country and critters! Looking forward to another trip!
Reviewed by Guest on April 2024Loved the property and habitat. They had a ton of standing wheat which was surrounded by several grass fields, offering great cover. One field in particular had the most bird poop I’ve seen in a field. It was everywhere! My dog was able to find some sharpies and Huns. I would love to hunt here again. Andy

The Mill Iron Ranch is one of the most beautiful places I have hunted. The ranch is family friendly and a great place for hunters of all abilities. My 10 year old son was able to take his first buck here. Kathy and Dick were very responsive and gave great advice on how to navigate the property. My family and I hope to have many visits in the years to come!

My brother and I hunted at the Mill Iron ranch for one day in October. The host was excellent. Very kind, helpful and knowledgeable. He did everything he could to try and help us get on birds.
Reviewed by Guest on October 2023 Dick was extremely helpful in trying to find the birds, even though it was very warm one day and the next day the wind was very strong making it very tough for my dog to find scent! Saw some huns, pheasant and sharps but I think due to the conditions, flushed for the most part, out of range. A lot of attractive land to hunt on! Five stars to Dick and his property!

Peaceful surroundings and hunting out the front door of our trailer! Hospitable host family too. Incredible bird hunting habitat - a variety of crops, natural grasslands and CRP-like ground. Hope to get back again. Thanks Dick and Kathy, Keon and Billy Jo!

I enjoyed hunting this property. Bird numbers were down due to drought, but I found huns, sharpies, and pheasants. I also saw mule deer, coyotes, and a fox. Camping was very quiet. I don't think a single vehicle went by after dark.
